I couldn’t wait! I had to know. But the cries at the chills that passed through the tender shoots made me sad. I’m referring to the perennials and bulbs that have started to reach for the sun.
But the poor little buds begged to be blanketed under the snug leaves and be allowed a longer nap. So after doing a paparazzi thing, I covered them back over and left them in peace.
While I wandered my property looking for signs of life, I caught a song sparrow in the midst of getting his territory established. Listen for their calls while you’re out walking. When you hear it, stop and say a prayer of thanks for the blessing Mother Nature just gave you. https://youtu.be/PkOnpk8Wmow
The grackles and red-winged blackbirds are back, which means spring is just around the corner. Hoo-yeah!

Two red-winged males, a female red-winged, along with a grackle waiting his turn.
The ducks are still hanging around but the competition is getting fierce as to who will get the primo Elsie Avenue breeding spot. We’re down to about six pairs and I’m taking votes as to what their names should be this year.
My first year, 2013, I had Mama and Daddy.

The originals — Mama and Daddy.
2014 brought Angie and Brad.

Brad kept watch while Angie ate dinner.
In 2015 we had Harry and Franny.

Sigh, Franny never gave me any grandchildren.
Who will it be this year? I’m voting for Eric and Annah (more on this later).

Things are heating up!
A wood duck stopped by for some corn and made my Mallard look a hulk-like.
It’s not fair that Mom Nature would create such a stunning duck when the female Mallards can never have a shot with him.
I mean, seriously, would you pick a Mallard drake when this little fellow is flashing some fine feathers?
As long as I’m on the topic of male glory, today is Sadie Hawkins Day, also known as Leap Day.
And you know what this means? Yup, I’m officially putting it out there.
Keanu Reeves, will you marry me?
I promise to be true and never pick on you when you look scanky or scrubby. And when you’re sad I promise to cheer you up.
Though dude, really, the hat has to go!
Blessed be :}
